A steady stream of 'hate mail' has been reaching our mailboxes since an unauthorized early draft of the 'Dogma' script was placed on the Web many months ago. This was followed by a booklet distributed by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights which urged people to write to then distributor Miramax/Disney with their complaints. As such, most of the letters are addressed to either Disney, Miramax, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, or Michael Eisner. Please note that all of these letters were sent months before the film was even announced for release. The following is a sample of the type of 'hate mail' that we've been getting: Posted on October 8th, 1999 Mr. Anti-Christian: You are disgusting and dispicable. Anyone that would produce a movie as Dogma is sick, anti-family, and you must really be hard-up. Apparently, Disney needs more cash so you are stooping to a level beyond anything I can think of to draw the really low lifes, altered lifestyle people, and scum. I have e-mailed all my friends and family, telling them about this movie. I will not ever, ever again watch the Disney channel, visit any of your theme parks, or purchase anything that even resembles any of the Disney characters. I have advised everyone that I know to do the same and pass the contents of your movie to everyone they know. And how could any of your actors portray the people you have in your movie. They all must be, as yourself, SATANISTS! You know, it is really a shame. Walt Disney made his company into something he was proud of, something that everyone would be glad to be a part of. I had the utmost respect for him. But you, however, have sunk to the bottom, and if you don't change your tune, you will be at the bottom. HOW COULD YOU DO IT? I'LL PRAY FOR YOU. Harvey and Robert Weinstein: I am writing to protest your film "Dogma" whose Cannes review is indeed troubling for me as an active Roman Catholic. The toilet humor and the tale of Bethany, a Catholic abortion clinic worker (an oxymoron if I ever heard of one) sounds absolutely gross. In view of recent school shootings, how in conscience can your new film contain scenes of mass slaughter, which VARIETY reports. Didn't the Columbine massacre sober you at all? From your name, I assume you are Jewish. It is a beautiful religion. I would never make fun of any of the practices of the Jewish people. It appalls me that you take such perverse humor in demeaning my religion. I would never produce a film in which Moses ran a brothel, David owned a pornographic bookstore, and Ruth was a hooker. First you give us Prince of Egypt for our small children which was good + you made plenty of $$$ Now you want to make Dogma to trash our blessed mother for $$$$$ You may not answer here today for moral decay but you will ask to a higher at your death bed. Origin Unknown ----------------------------------- Dear Sir, Walt Disney, the creator of the fabulous company of which you are the president, would be appalled at the recklessness and lack of decency that the Disney Corporation is projecting as an affiliate of Miramax Films. The thought that Disney Corporation would be associated with a production that would knowingly offend millions of people is unthinkable. It has been said that Miramax is a small part of Disney, which gears itself to adult audiences, and delves into more delicate subjects. The material in "Dogma", one of Miramaxs' latest projects, is not adult material, it is distasteful, offensive, obscene, violent, and profane. It condones murder, drugs, drunkeness and rebellion. It distorts and mocks scripture. How dare Kevin Smith insult the faith and belief of millions of people. I hold you and Disney Corporation responsible for being a part of such an outrageous production, and I vehemently protest the distribution of this vile film.
