The honourary Jersey Canuck joins the Bloor Cinema for a series of half hour Q&A's following screenings of six of his flicks!!

Love him or hate him, Kevin Smith was one of the nineties' most influential American auteurs, channeling pre-millennial slacker angst into comedies that are frequently more beautiful and loving than they have any right to be. Best appreciated as a package, the better to tease out their interconnectivity, the first five films of the Askewniverse hop genres and styles from low-budget black-and-white indie (Clerks.) to eighties teen-comedy riff (Mallrats) to existential romantic drama (Chasing Amy) to fantasy-satire (Dogma) to cartoonish road movie (J&SBSB). Although some are better than others, each is most rewarding when taken in the context of the whole series; just as with a good TV show, watching the mythology develop and weave back into itself is half the fun.

In Clerks. (1994), a convenience store employee (Brian O'Halloran) and his best friend who works at the video store next door (Jeff Anderson) confront their pasts and future prospects over the course of a single, increasingly-eventful day. Sun., Feb. 8, 7:00 p.m. 92 minutes.

See Clerks II Sun. Feb. 8, 10:00 p.m. 97 minutes.

In Mallrats (1995), two friends (Jeremy London and Jason Lee) hang out at the mall following breakups with their respective girlfriends. Mon., Feb. 9, 7:00 p.m. 94 minutes.

In Chasing Amy (1997), a comic book author (Ben Affleck) falls in love with a woman (Joey Lauren Adams) whom he's dismayed to learn is gay. Mon., Feb. 9, 9:30 p.m. 113 minutes.

In Dogma (1999), a contemporary descendent of Christ (Linda Fiorentino) discovers it's her responsibility to prevent two fallen angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) from bringing about the end of existence. Tues., Feb. 10, 7:00 p.m. 130 minutes.

In Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the title characters (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith), who have appeared in all the previous films, journey to Hollywood to thwart the production of a movie based on comic-book characters they inspired. Tues., Feb. 10, 10:00 p.m. 104 minutes.

It's not like Cinematheque Ontario is going to be doing a Kevin Smith retrospective any time soon, so take advantage of this rare opportunity to view, askew, this fascinating body of work all at once.

See 'em all for only $60! Limited tickets available, so buy your pass now. Tickets for individual screenings available for $15 in advance or $18 at the door.
