: How long have some of you been fans of Kevin Smith movies?
That sounds like a very simple question, doesn't it?
Ok, well... I saw CLERKS at the Varsity Theater on it's original run in 1994, I guess. My impression of it at that time was that there was a lot of really hysterically funny material in it and credible level of character development and heart. There were things I wasn't too happy with - I thought Caitlin fucking the dead guy in the bathroom didn't fit with the overall tone of the film, just went a tad too far - most of which I've developed an affection for over the years.
I saw MALLRATS late. I'm sorry, Kevin. Late enough that I'd already heard how crummy it was. As such, I went in with pretty low expectations and really had a blast. It's a laugh out loud funny movie. You also find the real heart of the movie when you know it.
Still, at none of this point would I have ever called myself a "fan" per se.
I saw CHASING AMY shortly after it came out. It was my first real date with my girlfriend, who for the record is still my girlfriend - Thanks for the good starting place, Kevin. I suppose this was the point that I really started to consider myself a fan. He had brought the heart of the characters to forefront, while still using the laughs as a seasoning to the film as whole. Very enjoyable, very moving.
I suppose it was after that where I would consider myself a fan. The point at which I really came to admire Kevin Smith's talent, growth and effort as writer and as a filmmaker.
So, while I can consider myself among the first to be aware of Kevin and his work. And an early comer to enjoying it. I think I'm relatively in the middle of the road as far as fully appreciating all that there is to love and admire in it.
I hope this answers your question.
