I think it's actually more effective to cut vertically. Most people make the mistake of cutting horizonatally, because that's the cliche, but it takes longer to bleed to death and sometimes doesn't even kill me, I mean, the person doing it. Vertically=more of the vein being cut.
I'd just hate to think of one of these people taking your advice and failing to kill themselves.
