I urge some of you who were too young at the time, who have never seen this film, take a look at it, for shock value alone, and realize that it was shown in major theaters, and drive-ins, unedited, and unrated, with mainstream newspaper advertising.
Not disagreeing with your point overall, but it did just get a 25th Anniversary re-release and was shown in major theaters unedited with major newspaper advertising, so...
I know, I went. It's hysterically funny. Great movie.
