".
: I can think of three possibilities:
: 1: (the one i hope for) God forgives Bartleby and Loki and sends them to heaven, not being a paradox because, of course, God is lifting the banishment. The only question with this is... what about all the corpses in the street, does God embrace them in some sort of pre-view rapture, taking them straight to heaven body & soul, or what?
the happy happy joy joy side of me likes this one, but the logical,
accountant-like (though i'm thankfully not one-- not that there's
anything wrong with that!) side of me would have to go with #2
: 2: (also discussed) Bartleby and Loki die as mortals, with mortal sins on their souls and go to hell.
it sucks, but i think that's the only logical solution. unless...
it all becomes one giant mulligan and everybody gets to start all
over (see #3), in which case the whole movie sort of has no point
other than the Bethany thing. personally, i love that idea! and the
catholic church should too, since it all becomes about reaffirming
Bethany's faith. (as ben said in an interview i saw [roughly] "if
people get really upset by this movie, they should really reevaluate
whether they actually have a sense of humor.)
(plus, since they are sorry, it seems unfair to chuck them to the
dark one.)
: 3: God walks out, sees all the carnage. Bing! it's gone. the third possibility, God sets everything right. All the people are alive, back in their homes, Bartleby and Loki are back in WI serving their sentance, and the only humans who are any the wiser are Bethany Silent, Bob and Jay.
as far as bartleby boozing, by the way,i just assumed that he was, if
anything, pulling the old "can't really hold my liquor so i'll just
pretend toswig either with my lips closed or spitting it back into
the bottle so i'm not passed out in some idiot frat boy's bed by
10:30" trick.
or was that just my college life...?
but anyway, LOVED the movie! i've made 4 of my friends go see it
already, and they loved it too (explaining why we're friends). i
particularly loved when jay explained how it's john hughes's fault
that they're in illinois. brilliant! reminded me again how
spectacularly creative and clever kevin is. BRAVO!!!
