We all like Mallrats here (or at least we like some of the jokes and love Jason Lee in it), but GET REAL!!
The movie made no dough. At all. Kevin got ripped a new cornhole by the critics over it. A sequel would mean getting Shannen Doherty and Jeremy London back and NO ONE wants to see that.
It's a great college dorm room movie, but NO ONE aside the Kevin fanatics and your "buds" would go see the flick.
I think the comic book deal is the IDEAL form to follow up Mallrats. It delivers the product to the appropriate audience and it gives me the luxury of reading TS Quint's lines without having to hear Jeremy "Party of Five/IQ of Four" London reading them.
