It seems that God limits himself to earthly abilities while in human form. Otherwise, playing Skeeball would be pointless since he'd get 100 points every ball.
Note that the Stygian Triplets take great pains to catch "John Doe Jersey" unawares. They hit him from behind and daze him before beating him. So God, in human form, doesn't have time to react. They then beat him to within an inch of his life, taking care not to kill him. It's kind of like those old stories about caging Death, he can't do anything until he escapes.
