I don't think God had to die to get back, except in this unusual circumstance He was unconscious and, as such, unaware that He needed to get back to Heaven to solve the world's woes. Remember that Metatron says God could help if only they could find Him.
As far as blinking Himself back to Heaven when the Stygian Triplets attacked, I believe they were supposed to have surprised Him before He had a chance to do anything like that.
Mind you, that all assumes that He didn't play out the whole thing for the benefit of Bethany and her lost faith, as someone suggested below. I'm personally not willing to discount that possibility.
