I went to see DOGMA for the third time last night. I deliberately saw the movie at three different theaters to guage different crowds. All three showings were evening hours (7:00-9:00 p.m. start times). The first showing, a large multiplex near Akron, OH on opening night, was packed. The age range of the crowd was pretty diverse, though the bulk was 20's and 30's. The film was very well received (I posted on this one earlier.) The second showing was a a small, off-the-interstate multiplex in Canton, OH on a weeknight. The theater was about 1/2 full, the audience leaning more toward the 30-40 age range. Again, very well received, laughter at all the right times, intent listening to dialogue all other times. Last night, I went to a theater in a strip mall in Kent, OH, largely a college town. The theater was about 3/4 filled, more teens than previous viewings, but still mostly 20's and 30's, same reactions. Much more milling about outside the theater afterwards, discussing key points about the film.
All in all, industrial-strength kudos to Kevin and crew for entertaining so many people so well. Me? I loved the film so much after the first viewing, I immediately added a review to my set of web pages and e-mailed a notice to everyone in my address book. I don't remember the last time a film inspired me to that kind of action.
