About a week ago, I posted a review from the Sacramento Bee where the local critic gave Dogma a one-star review. Now today, this numb-nuts has written his annual "Golden Turkey Awards" where he lists the year's most overrated film, directors, and stars (see, it's Golden Turkey 'cause it's Thanksgiving, get it? What wit!) and his pick for most "overstuffed director" is none other than our own Kevin Smith. Like to hear it? Here it go.
5. Overstuffed Director: Kevin Smith
"If ever there was a filmmaker least deserving of all the attention he's getting, it's Kevin Smith, director of the current 'Dogma'. In my book, Smith is a one-trick pony. His script for his first film, 'Clerks,' was great, but it's been downhill ever since. Now, suddenly, Smith is the cinema wunderkind of the moment - way, way overstuffed."
"I don't get it. Maybe I missed class that day. Hasn't anyone noticed that the guy has no cinematic eye and has exhibited no knowledge of the camera? He hasn't seemed to learn anything "on the job" in the ensuing years. Yes, he might be able to write nasty, foul-mouthed dialogue, but that's about it. Overstuffed, hands-down."
Downhill ever since Clerks, huh? This guy gave Chasing Amy three and a half stars, for Christ's sake! And Mallrats two stars, which was way higher than the national average. Anyhoo, I plan to write a letter throwing these facts in his face and raising all kinds of hell. If it gets printed, I'll put it up here.
Oh, and click below to read the article yourself. He also takes swipes at Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Roberto Benigni, and Analyze This.
