What's the deal with Burt Reynolds?

I've noticed that in 'Rats and Dogma, Jason Lee has had three Burt Reynolds refrences ("Except for the mustache"..."Like Burt Reynolds and shit"...and in DOGMA, the woman he kills is Ms. Reynolds).

Then, today, reading some old Lee boards, I see he mentions Reynolds as a historical figure he'd like to play?

Does anyone know what the deal with all the Burt refrences are? Is it an inside joke, or does Lee just have an affinity for the actor?
