We went to see Dogma today in a suburb of Kansas City, Mo. called Overland Park, Ks. We were welcomed by a line of protestors carrying signs that all said "Dogma Mocks God," or something to that effect. They were all at the opposite end of the theater's parking lot, (I imagine somewhere close to the property line) so I didn't have much time to read while driving by, but I got the idea.
Inside, there was a pretty good sized-crowd, I thought, for 4 in the afternoon on a Sunday when the Chiefs were playing at home. There were two people who got up and left after the first five minutes or so, but unfortunately they were the wrong people. Why couldn't the couple with the cell phone have been offended?
Anyway, for what it's worth, the other people there all seemed to, like me, laugh a lot, and seemed moved by the experience. On a personal note, I was not prepared by how moved I would be by this movie. I expected to laugh, but I didn't know I'd doubt my own doubts about the existence of God.
By the time we left the theater, all the picketers had left - I guess the evening show audiences have to look after their own souls.
