They go to heaven. God, as a perfect being will grant forgiveness when asked for it. Thats why Bartleby thanks "her" at the conclusion of the film. God's infallibility was reaffirmed by admitting Bartleby to Heavan, not nullified.
Why a movie that examines faith so painstakingly and ultimately reaffirms it would be so attacked by religion is mystfying. Unless of course you accept the premise that the point of organized Religion is to advance a set of personal agendas rather than spirituality.
