Just a little Q about Clerks

Since Mr. Smith will probably not read this, does anyone know if he had the movie Clerks preformulated in his head or he just wrote as it came to him? I'm assuming most people have things preformulated, but due to the randomness of Clerks, I thought it was possible that he just wrote as he got ideas. This is probably a difficult question to answer unless a) you are Kevin Smith, or b) this question has been asked before.
