Partner and I saw Dogma this weekend. Brilliant. Sorry I was not raised a Catholic so I could enjoy the film on an even deeper level. Happen to be a gay man who is an atheist (and an old fart as well--61 years old), but left wishing Alanis WERE god. If god were music, perhaps I could believe. Believe Kevin Smith is an exceptional writer/thinker/film maker. Have loved the talk in all his films, even when the narrative was a twisted road that (a)mazed me into confusion.
Thanks, Mr. Smith, for a look at your lovely, wonderful mind, however scary it is to some. You have made a film that will survive the time/space in which it was created, filled with ideas and concepts sure to continue to exhilarate. Wish those who hand out shinning awards would honor your screenplay, but there are cowards out there, you know. Shrug off the bad press being given the film by those who declare themselves christian. If they don't understand the affirmation of god/belief systems in Dogma, f-'em. Personally, I believe in my partner and our six cats, and visiting with your Dogma characters for those two and a half hours reaffirmed my choice as valid.
Blessings on your head, Lad, from whatever god they may come. Stay sane, and keep working.
