I too come from a mixed-religion family (mom is Catholic and Dad is Jewish, but neither of them are practicing at all) and I took my mom to see it and she loved it (Dad had to work, but he will see it). Afterwards, we were talking about all the controversy the movie has raised and she said that she was surprised that it's mostly fundamentalists protesting the film, not Catholics (at least that's the way it's been around here-- I know there was a large Catholic group that was pretty pissed). She said the Catholic church, and a lot of the other Christian religions, are like dysfunctional families-- it's okay to bitch about it if you're a member, but if someone outside of the "family" points out a fault, they're wrong--it's like a form of denial.
If there wasn't so much language (it doesn't bother me, but...)I would tell my Aunt Margaret to go-- she's in her late 60's, an ex-nun who left the order to protest things like nuclear arms, and other social injustices, such as The School of the Americas. I think she'd really like it, but I also think she's still pretty sensitive to things like language, sex, etc.
