I took a look at the Black Jesus painting, and I must say that it bothers me greatly. It's not that I care how Jesus is depicted, per se, because we have absolutely no idea what the hell he looked like. What does bother me is the idea that a black Jesus is somehow more contemporary and accessible. After all, isn't Jesus' forgiveness supposed to transcend racial lines? Hell, there aren't even any such things as different "races" among humankind; different groups of people have just adapted to their traditional environments differently. But I diverge. The point of all this, is that to say Jesus' image has to be updated suggests that his teachings are also outdated. That's damn near heresy, if one cares to use Catholic terminology. . .

: So you may or may not know but the National Catholic Reporter, an small weekly newspaper, was running a competition to design a Jesus for the Year 2000, or JC2K. Apparently they received over 1500 entries. As far as I know, no Buddy Jesus image was given though. Well, I bring this up now, other than the obvious Catholism WOW! relationship is the NCR decided their winner today, a Black Jesus no less. Influence of Rufus, or is God once again working in the most mysterious ways as I haven't heard a single shread of protest over this, while we all know about the Dogma debacle.

: Anyways, here's the info from the NCR webpage
