: well everyone, i have been watching the posts in the past few weeks after dogma's long awaited release, and the flurry of activity or more aptly the activism has been very amusing.
: dogma has reminded me of some experiences i had in the private catholic school i attended in college. old testament and religion classes were part of our core curriculum, and we used to get into huge theological discussions in the cafeteria, at the bars, or out around campus.
: i was an athlete there at school, not attending it because of it's religious affiliation, and religion was a new area for me.
: after hearing many of the items brought up in religion classes, i loved arguing points that we went over in class, more than anything to gain a further understanding of what these people were thinking.
: some of the catholic students would get so worked up over some points that we argued that they would go nuts during these discussions and storm off. we used to have all manner of people present, from catholics and christians, to the non-practicing and jewish..and everyone had an opinion.
: the great thing was that all these varying people could get together and bring some point of view that someone else may have never thought of before. i hadn't thought of these discussions until i saw dogma when it was released, and talked to some fellow alumni who had seen dogma as well, and the funny thing (and i guess my whole reason for posting) was this...everyone who had seen it from die hard catholic, to jew, to myself, who practices no religion all could agree that the incredible charecteristic dogma has is it's ability to spark debate, and therefore education.
: you can see hundreds of movies today, but i can't think of more than 10 in the past decade that have been able to make people talk (and THINK) about issues like religion like dogma has done in the past few weeks.
: i just looked on some georgetown university boards, and there were professors on there arguing with students about what dogma has been doing to catholicism. i just think that is incredible and i hope kevin keeps bringing the issues and the comedy to the forefront.
I place Dogma in terms of making you think up there with
1. The Last Temptation of Christ
2. Contact
3. The Rapture
4. 2001
thats good company
