Well, everyone speaks about this farther down on this board so I figured I might as well throw in my opinions and get ripped if some of them go against someones narrow little mind. It is a shame Dogma got no Golden Globe nominations, even if they are a joke as Vincent believes. You would think after "Chasing Amy" with all the accolades and Top Ten lists it made, and all the success of Ben and Matt, the two together would be enough to get "Dogma" some sort of recognition from the Foreign Press or whoever nominates films for the GG's. Anyway, I must say these 3 things.
1. I have no illusions about "Dogma" getting any nominations at the Oscars. As much as I love the flick, it just won't happen unless a miracle occurs. I thought maybe for Screenplay, Score, or Song, but since Dogma didn't get nominated in these categories for the fucking Golden Globes, I now believe it just won't happen. Its a shame.
2. I agree with whoever it was that said its a fucking shame that "Analyze This" and ESPECIALLY, "Notting Hill" got nominations over Dogma. I didn't like either of them at all, and compared to Dogma they were just unoriginal and dull. Rip me if you want.
3. The thing that most pisses me off are the three categories in #1 and how Dogma was snubbed there. There are 8 films nominated for Best Score, but Dogma is not one of them. I will admit that since a few of them aren't out yet, like Angela's Ashes, I don't know what to think of their scores, but I know that I love the Score to Dogma and Howard Shore's work on it. I wish it had squeezed in somehow. Also, do not take me putting down Angela's Ashes as some slight against it, the film is not out yet and if the score is as beautiful as McCourt's writing in the book, it may deserve a nomination, I have to say that the trailer for it is great, and I love that Irish song they sing in it, "A Mother's Love is a Blessing". OK OK, back to the subject. Madonna and "Beautiful Stranger" over Alanis and "Still"? Come on! Sure the song is catchy and the video funny and Madonna is damn hot in it, but Still is such a great song with beautiful lyrics and mystical sounds and is just so awesome. I listen to it everyday at least twice. Question: Why isn't Still being played on the radio? It isn't at all in St. Louis at least. I can't remember some of the other songs, I think one is from Anna and the King. Give me a break. Speaking personally, I don't ever want to have to watch The King and I or any bastardized version of it again, whether onstage, or in movie theatres. Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr or whoever it was got it perfect the first time, leave well enough alone. Finally, Screenplay. There were a lot of great ideas in movies this year and they were written well. I particulary liked American Beauty. Being John Malkovich certainly was the most original idea in movies this year, but I thought the film itself 30 minutes too long and didn't really like what happened to John Malkovich in it, but that is just a question of personal taste. Even though I saw it coming, I liked The Sixth Sense, but not more than Dogma. I just think the ideas and story and Kevins wonderful, distinctive dialogue in Dogma deserve an award. Kevins films are known for their great dialogue, he deserves a major award or at least a nomination for his writing. My 55 year old dad found Dogma to be the most interesting film of the year, and I agree. I love Dogma and I just think it should get some kind of recognition. I posted on Board 123 about how i think Dogma should get lots of MTV Movie Awards Nominations this summer, unless the summer blockbusters just completely overwhelm it, check it out please. Anyway, there's my rant, I know it doesn't change anything, but I feel a lot better letting it out. Sincerely, your View Askew friend. Mr.Combat.
