My naive opinion:

If you really love something, it doesn't feel as much like work. The hours and dedication are still there, and maybe there are aspects of the process you don't like, but overall, you have to really want to be doing it. I think that applies to all endeavors that at least initially lack monetary incentive. Great artists do it because it's the only way to express what they're thinking or feeling. It's a have to thing. Some people have to create, and it's not about the audience, just the necessity of expression. I don't know that this applies to all artists, probably just the great ones. All I'm saying is, examine why you feel you want to make movies, remember that some pursuits hold their value intrinsically, and decide accordingly.
