Here's what I read in the NY Times magazine. There are a few interviews
with PT Anderson (of the love-it or hate-it "Magnolia" fame) in Daily News
and USA Today, the latter of which he refutes the criticism that he's a
pompous movie director (who happens to be a hypocrite for thrashing David
Fincher and "Fight Club" in Creative Screenwriting and Rolling Stone). Did
this guy graduate from high school?
The article was HIS WAY in The New York Times Magazine p52 on Dec 19, 99.
I call it a hoot because for example he says the following:
1. "...I consider MAGNOLIA a kind of beautiful accident..."
2. ...Cruise gives a virtuoso performance but he is not currently promoting
the film... he felt his fame would overshadow the ensemble nature of the
film
3. his initial cut ... was 3:18 ... "You have to sit and absorb it"
4. Anderson is Catholic. He believes in atonement and confession
5. When New Line wanted the hot BOOGIE NIGHTS director they gave him free
rein... "You hired me to be cool. You didn't hire me to make money"
6. Anderson has trouble watching other movies: "I see the crew in every
shot"
7. when Anderson was 22 he bummed his girlfriend for money to write and
direct CIGARETTES AND COFFEE, a 24-minute short about five people in a
diner accepted at Sundance in 93.
8. Anderson begins writing with a list of characters' traits, everything
about them. "the great films give you a person, or people and their world.
That's my goal".
9, Anderson lost a fight over his first film SIDNEY that was recut by
Rysher and called HARD EIGHT.
10. Robert Shaye really didn't like (BOOGIE NIGHTS). Anderson feels that's
why New Line spent so little on the ad campaign for MAGNOLIA
11. Michael DeLuca saw the frogs in the film and said "Thank God we don't
have to test this"
I included these bits just in case you can't get the whole article.
Someone should shove Kermit in PTA's throat to choke to death at the Golden
Globes for the crime of inflating the ego to kiss ass with the critics and
Hollywood. The pompous-ass motherfucker doesn't deserve shit, "Magnolia" is
just another begging Oscar bait
