: DARWINIAN evolution, which does imply random evolution. Not to get nitpicky. But, your point (other than that) is well taken.
And by Darwinism, I was referring to the general concept of evolution and not a specific school of evolution. Lets not allow this to become a contest of semantic slight of hand. I think my meaning was always clear. Punctuated equillibrium implies that natural selection is not a factor in evolution. It helps to account for the many missing links we have in the fossil record (something creationists will often exploit). Darwin's theory of evolution has been modified over the course of time just as Newton's theories have been subject to change. Nevertheless, the fact of evolution still exists. The fact that Earth is on the third orbital ring around the sun remains. Apples still fall to the ground when dropped from tall structures.
Science attempts to explain the how and what of matters. Let people determine the why on their own.
