How is the cast chosen?

I'd like to know how the actors are chosen, through auditions, typecasting, etc. and how new actors can gain the attention of the director or casting agents if they're not from CA or NY. Do you try to locate independent actors, or use primarily talent agencies and scouts?

Sorry about the 3rd degree, but I'd really like to know.
