The idea is that both men and women can be both sensitive AND assertive.
As Howard Beale said the problem comes when people go too far to either extreme. No one likes a wimp (either a male or a female). And no one likes an insensitive asshole (again, either sex). The people who manage to strick a balance are the ones who are the most successful, and are the most attractive.
And as far as to whether it's confusing? Sure, life is confusing. Anyone who tell you otherwise is an insensitive asshole! Heh.
