Kevin,
It worries me that you would offically abandon the history of the Askewniverse to make Jay-less-and-Bob-less movies forever. You can make a movie or ten that don't have Jay and Silent Bob in it without declaring that their world is permanently shut down or closed out. That's just depressing.
Take some advice from yourself, Kevin. In Chasing Amy, Alyssa becomes a lesbian to keep her options open. But if she denies her potential for happiness with Holden because she's a lesbian, she is forgetting the reason she went with women in the first place. Make the films you want, Kevin, but don't cut off the possibilities of having Brodie or the Hicks triplets show up in the future. Close out the Askewniverse permanently? Jesus, first the Ramones break up, now this.
Wouldn't you feel betrayed and a little pissed if people up and decided one day that they were going to stop buying Kevin Smith material permanently? I can totally understand taking a break from making Jay & Silent Bob flicks. Even taking a decade-long break would be totally acceptable, so long as the understanding was that the door wasn't closed tight and locked shut. Are the projects you want to do in the future so crucial that some kind of total closure with the Askewniverse is necessary in order for you to branch out? Now THAT'S pretentious.
Please don't make Clerks 2 or Mallrats 2 or whatever simply as a final crowd-pleaser before you jump headlong into making war movies or prison flicks for the rest of your life. You can make the kind of quality pictures you want to without permanently severing ties to the popular monsters you've created. We'll watch the movies regardless, because we're fans of your ability, not just of a few of your characters. Just remember why you became a lesbian in the first place, and keep your options open.
I'm Ron Ferraro and I guess that's all I have to say.
