It's just that when it comes to film, the accusations that producers/directors have been "stealing" the techniques of other producers/directors is so prevalent today that I'm surprised to hear it's a common practice in film schools or wherever this dude is attending.

Look at what you just wrote. How is okay to copy art to find your own style, but it isn't okay copy film to find your own style
