I've always felt that the Miramax hype machine worked its magic in getting nominations, not in getting awards. Awards go to whatever the old fogeys like (though they've been known to toss a screenplay bone to really good movies), whereas nominations rely on the marketing of the film by its studio to the Hollywood community. Christ, pick up any industry mag in January and every ad in there says "For Your Consideration..." The Weinsteins are the acknowledged masters of this practice, too. I really don't see how else one could justify the "Cider House Rules" gaggle of noms...good acting, but not really that good of a movie.
