Probably some of both. When I was a kid, I loved Edgar Rice Burroughs. Read all the Tarzan books, the John Carter stuff. Loved it all. Then I reread them as an adult, and though the energy and themes still had vitality, good God, did the man over-write. Technically, it was ghastly.
For the record, I wasn't blown away by the way the Vegas stuff on Hulk turned out either. I was trying for something and fell short of it, I think...although curiously, some people claim it's their favorite period of the book, so...different strokes.
Shame you don't like "Supergirl" though. At this point it's probably the most ambitious work I've got going. But, again...different strokes.
