Kevin Smith has always said that Jay & Bob where the C-3PO & R2-D2 of the Viewaskewniverse (the constant characters who serve to carry the story and appear at pivotal moments!!!). In fact in the Mallrats trading card set Kevin compares all the major characters to Star Wars characters:
