There might be a flaw. Symbolically, there are connections yes. Chasing Amy was Smith's most personal film regarding basic relationships and humanity. DOGMA may be the most personal to Kev though, but that's another story. Anyways, A lot of the story is based on Kevin's personal feelings and events, and character. Although the gay and lesbian angle was inspired by his friendship with Guin Turner, the conflicts of the relationship are based on the differences between the two people, Kevin and Joey when they were dating. Kevin has oftened likened himself to Holden, much as Walt was the Brodie template in Mallrats.

Holden and Banky's first comic, which put them on the map was "37" a no budget comic in black and white based on their conversations and events at Food City, competitor to Quik Stop. The Egg Man is even a character. Of course this would be akin to Smith and Mosier's first movie which put them on the map, the no budget black and white comedy CLERKS based on the exploits and conversations of Smith and coworkers while working at the Quik Stop.

Then Banky and Holden were given some money and an opportunity to make an impressive follow up. Rather than go for another down to earth, spirited tale of humanity with skilled writing they do BLUNTMAN AND CHRONIC, by far not a critical masterpiece, but a cult favorite nonetheless. Much like Mallrats.

CHASING AMY goes back to Holden's roots, the indie scene, and this time telling the most personal story yet, much like the flick of the same name.

This is, I'm sure no new information to most people who have probably already made the connection. There is a flaw as I've said: BLUNTMAN AND CHRONIC was a huge hit initially. MALLRATS tanked and was for a time reviled and ignored. Even Smith admits wanting to distance himself from his failure initially, after the box office poison that was his sophomore effort. In addition, Bluntman and Chronic was debated being turned into a cartoon, much like Clerks is becoming now, so where that leaves the similarities...who knows.

: "I want to do something personal like my first comic" Holden
