I read an interview he did somewhere -- I think on Wizard's site -- about the movie, and he said that he wrote a script based on the Death of Superman story, but the studio said they wanted Braniac to be the villian. Kev thought it was odd because Braniac is a nerd, but wrote one anyways.
John "Batman was good because I got real swordsmen for it" Peters then came in and "helped" Kevin with a rewrite of that version. Peters cut Kevin's favorite scene -- the one with Lois and Supes on Mt. Rushmore -- and made him do all kinds of stupid things like the spider, polar bears, and the "no fliying" stuff, but Kevin persevered and eventually finished his script.
Burton read it, liked it, came on board for it, scrapped it; ostensibly because all his movies read "Tim Burton's: Something or Other" at the beginning and Kevin's script would make it "Kevin Smith's: Superman Lives", and he simply COULDN'T have that; got new writers, didn't like the crap they churned out, and quit for Sleepy Hollow.
