Cleaning a Banky Hat?

Hi all, first off I loved the second Clerks:TCS, love the Stand By Me ending!
Now on to my post, I have the Banky hat that was (is) on Viewaskew. It is getting a little dirty and I want to clean it but I am scare that with the bring color's of the green and red letter it made fade. Or worst the color could run together.
I never cleaned a hat, one time I did in the washing machine but it really screwed it up!
Anyone have any ideas?
