I'd just like to say a few words about both of these movies.
I saw Dogma first, mostly at the insistance of my friends from Drama Club. It was amazing. I've never seen a more witty portrayal of the idiocy that can descend upon the faiths of the world. Now, I realize that it's a pro-faith movie. I got that right away. I especially enjoyed the part where Rufus talks about people needing to have ideas instead of beliefs. It's so true. But, it was also VERY well written and well educated. Most of the time, when a movie 'attacks' something or just tries to get said something to look at itself in a new light it comes off as unintelligent and crass. Dogma did not, and I applaud you for it.
After I saw Dogma I said, "That was cool. Maybe I'll pick up the other movies sometime." I thought nothing more of it until two days ago. I decided that since I had a Blockbuster Gift Card around I'd go rent all four of them, like my friends (again) suggested, and watch them all in order.
Clerks was amusing and well done, but sadly my least favorite (personal tastes rise again). Mallrats was incredibly amusing and I think that anyone who doesn't like it can go suck a lemon.
Chasing Amy was... I can't find a word.
I've seen a LOT of movies. I've read a LOT of books. I've listened to a LOT of music. I've seen a LOT of plays. Still, out of all those things that I've read or seen or listened to, I can think of only two that make me think or feel anything spectacular: a song called 'MacDougal's Pride' (it's by Ashley MacIsaac [a guy, for the record] - it's an instrumental piece) and Chasing Amy.
It's been a little over 48 hours since I saw Chasing Amy, and I'm STILL thinking about it. It's beautiful [YES! I found a word!]. I'm a bisexual, and I relate totally to what you (Kevin) had Alyssa say to Holden during the bedroom scene. When she talks about how she's not sorry she's where she is because she ended up there herself and by her own convictions. I loved how she talked about putting that mark on Holden because he was male when she had opened the door to women because of the same thing in the first place. That's exactly why I'm a bisexual. I've never heard anyone else explain it that way, and it's nice to know that there's a movie, something that's likely to be viewed by a lot of people, that can give that message out.
That it's not who or what you love, but how (as seen on the View Askew Chasing Amy website), or, if you ask me, that you love at all.
I just wanted to tip my hat to a great director and writer and an awesome cast and crew. You've really put a mark on the movie industry with all your movies.
