: I maintain that it is the superior Hughes movie, the better Molly Ringwald flick, the only good Judd Nelson anything ever,
AHEM! Need I point out at this juncture both "FROM THE HIP" and "SAINT ELMOS FIRE." Not to mention the voice work for the TRANSFORMERS.
(hopefully, the mix of semi-topicallity, with Kev as a Hughes fan, and the Banky Hat feeding frenzy above will let this exchange pass without a blip on the deletion radar)
Anyway, you are right in some respects, with BREAKFAST CLUB & PRETTY IN PINK being so compared and contrasted, but I submit to you this- BREAKFAST CLUB is about the breakdown of the social strata in a forced and "warping" test environment, while PRETTY IN PINK is about how things work in the world where folks *are not* stuck in an extended "elevator" episode.
: And an Andrew Dice Clay cameo does not speak well for any film. You're depressing me here.
He asks Duckie if he wants to learn to smoke! That is high comedy. And this is Dice before the fall- like Lucifer when he still wore his wings.
: "Pretty in Pink" is about conformity, my friend.
Ayup. And its honesty about it is what turns folks off. There's ugly in the mirror as well as pretty. The need to belong, or be accepted is a powerful one, and that is a facet of the whole thing.
Creating an illusion to deny one's true self.
I disagree. I think that the "angry, independant and contrary" stance is itself, in part illusion. Andie *wants* to be pretty and go to the prom; the denial of that want, the naming of it as "evil" is the illusion there.
The message is clear; ladies, depend upon & use the affections of the men in your life (Molly's poor dad & Duckie) while dreaming of escape to a more profitable level. Take the path of least resistance, and you will be rewarded with the pleased attentions of those above you in the social hierarchy.
See. my take on it is a precautionary morality tale to the would-be Duckies. Its all about realizing that being a best-friend with ulterior motives is ultimately a losing situation for all involved. Anger, pain and betrayal for the Duckman, and guilt, contempt, and mixed affection for the Molly Ringwalds.. And that in the end, the girl ends up with the "romantic lead." Lesson learned: Become the romantic lead if you want the girl. Be best friends with someone who you only want as a best friend.
: Nobody earns ANYTHING in "Pretty in Pink" --
Who someone ends up needing or loving (or, as is more often the case in High School, desiring) has very litte to do with earning.
Duckie don't get the girl,
He gets that prom-wallflower cutie.
the girl whines and pouts and acts ashamed of her father before finally groveling back into Andrew's arms, Andrew behaves like a dick,
BINGO!! I submit that this is the secret Zen-master lesson of the story. A dash of cruelty is the KFC secret ingredient of getting somebody ga-ga over you in the darwinian mess of high school dating. Only a dash, mind you; but without it, you are lost. On a geekier level, along thee same lines,it is easier to fall in love with Han Solo than Luke Skywalker.
everybody gets their cheesy happy ending.
Well, yeah. That's why its so much fun. Even Annie Potts gets a happy ending. And a lucrative Pop Secret endosement.
It's a cinematic justification for social ascription, my friend, capitalist propaganda.
Sos the ending to GREASE. Olivia Newton John becomes a trashy painted smoker, and doffs her goodie-two-shoes garb. Sure, Danny Zucco wears a letter jacket, but that thing comes off faster than a teeshirt on the Howard Stern Show, and the two dance as Greaser and Pink Lady.
I'll grant you that McCarthy was no Rouguish Hero- but he fit the bill more than Cryer. I've yet to meet anyone who honestly falls for the Comic Relief over the Scoundrel. It ain't pretty, but that's a fact, Jack.
: I know, this is tantamount to blasphemy, but that movie gets way too much credit.
Actually, my *favorite* Hughes movie is the most ueven one SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL. Better to discuss this at the film-411 board.

Beyond all that, the theme to PRETTY IN PINK is just plain cool...
Caroline laughs, and its raining all day...
