: sometimes movies just have to be re-bought. : but you can make some good out of it. : I've got clerks, mallrats and Chasing Amy on VHS tapes. : I recently bought a DVD player. : my girlfried, who I've turned into a fan, is about to inherit the Kevin Smith collection on VHS as soon as my new dvd's arrive from amazon.com : ahhh... the gift that keeps on giving, used vhs tapes filled with profanity and vulgarity. : Smith, you and technology have brought us closer together : : : : I couldn't find a cinema near me running Dogma during it's general release and thought that when the DVD came out it would be the real-deal. : : The one that's out there now IS the real deal. It's the real movie. Honest. : : : Instead we got the stripped down version and no notices in any magazines that a special edition was even on the horizon, so what does a fan do - he buys it, only to find out a month later that there's a special edition due in October. : : There were plenty notices about this out there, as I went out of my way to let people know there was a suped-up version on the horizon, following the standard release. On all the 'net DVD news-sites, I made sure folks know that the big, loaded version of the flick was forthcoming. : : : I realise that this is just marketing, getting the bucks back, but for fans it's a bit of a slap in the kisser. : : I disagree. Number one, the special edition wouldn't be done until fall 2000. Having A version of 'Dogma' out there insures that anyone who wanted to see the flick on DVD wouldn't have to wait months after the VHS release to do so. Number two, not everyone WANTS the suped-up version. The standard version, if bought online and in some stores, can be purchased for less than twenty bucks (American), whereas the special edition will probably be priced closer to $35-$40. Having the standard version out there, while not something everyone agrees with, is a good idea. : : : I have watched the movie and have to say - as usual it's what I expect from Kevin - brilliant, it's just a little tainted now that I know I have to buy another one later in the year just so I can see all the good stuff that got left out and listen to the entertaining commentaries. : : But you don't HAVE TO buy the next one. Rent it. Or hell, even borrow a friend's, if you don't want to shell out a second time for a 'Dogma' DVD. : : : We're not all made of money Kev, please try and avoid this for future films : : Yes, and being that we're not all made of money, a cheaper version of the DVD would be just what the doctor ordered. : : It's a shame we couldn't have the suped-up version done in time for day-and-date release with the VHS, but that's our fault, as we weren't done in time. Having the extra time to work on the suped-up version (thanks to the standard release coming first) just means a superlative DVD. : : But all that aside - again, I made sure in every interview that I gave folks the heads-up on the two releases. That you didn't see any of these doesn't mean we're trying to rape the public. : : Just trying to keep things in perspective.
