Columbia has been a big supporter of the DVD format from day one, and it's their policy to release a day-and-date edition on DVD along with the VHS rental tape. Now, there simply was *NO WAY* we could be finished with the special edition we wanted to do in time for the May VHS release date- beyond that, when we began discussing what we wanted to do it became clear that it would have to be either a 2-disc set or a DVD-18, which would drive up the price. So, Columbia opted to release a movie-only edition day-and-date with the tape and let us keep working on the S.E., rather than rush us to completion on a less-packed-than-we-wanted S.E. I think Columbia has some justification for releasing the movie-only disc- I mean, look at all the internet sites bitching about George Lucas not releasing the STAR WARS films on DVD. Lucas has said since he doesn't have time to do uber-S.E.s like he wants to of these films, the DVDs will have to wait until he DOES have the time- well, everybody has been moaning, "Can't you release movie-only editions in the meantime?" I wish DVD buyers would make up their minds- do they want to wait for the more expensive "special editions" and only have them released, or do they want "movie-only" editions released in the meantime at a lower cost? It's one or the other.
Thanks to the delay, we've been able to record another commentary track, and add a bunch of other additional goodies that we wouldn't have thought of had we not this extra time to reflect on the S.E.

: It was their fault for the two different releases. I'm sorry you got the lousy one, but the special edition will more than make up for it, right Vincent?
