Smith/Linklater Talks Conclude

DAYTON, OH (AP) -- A historical summit meeting between Kevin Smith and Richard Linklater ended today with mutual exchanges of respect between the two filmmakers.

The talks, which began on June 23, produced "very encouraging developments" says Irma Downey, press representative for the Kevin Smith delegation. "Up to this point, there had been some conflict between the two filmmakers," Downey acknowledged "but I think at this point, both will be able to continue their careers in peace."

From the beginning, the summit talks were plagued by potential pitfalls. Even the choice of the city for meeting became a bone of contention, with both sides finally agreeing on a neutral location at the midpoint between Red Bank, New Jersey and Austin, Texas.

The summit, while intended to be an informal meeting, did produce some significant agreements. Perhaps most notable was a settlement of the ongoing Ben Affleck custody dispute, in which the filmmakers agreed to a shared custody arrangement. "Basically, I'll be getting him on weekdays and Richard will get him on weekends and holidays," said Smith.

Both sides also agreed to emancipate Joey Lauren Adams and turn her over to state custody. "I never thought that much of her as an actress anyway, and Kevin said she sucked in bed too," Linklater explained.

The summit got off to a rocky start last Friday with a heated exchange between Smith and Linklater over whether it was Jeremy or Jason London who had starred in their respective films Mallrats and Dazed and Confused. The conflict was finally resolved with a trip to the Internet Movie Database, where it was determined that neither Jeremy nor Jason London had starred in either film.

The talks went smoothly after the initial London debate, with only one other disagreement. "Basically, we had a little argument over who came first, Jay or Slater," said Smith "We never could agree on the matter, so we just agreed to disagree in this one area."

According to Downey, further summit meetings are tentatively planned for early next year. The two filmmakers will also be participating in a upcoming "cast exchange program," with Linklater agreeing to provide a role for Jason Lee in his next film, and Smith agreeing to reciprocate with a role for Ethan Hawke in his next effort.
