idead I respect. I'm not to keen on the whole Norton thing, Will Smith would be a fucking hilarious casting job, but it plays too much into Chase's style of humor ("oh no! look at me it's my memory and I think I'm black!") Anyway Cusack would be terrific as well, though it would be his first quality role in a movie that he didn't work tightly on the developement and production of in a long time. The Norton idea rubs me the wrong way though...the man has talent, but I dunno. As for casting Fletch books treatments where he's older I suggest putting Mr. Pink himself, Steve Buschemi in there...now he'd be a natural older Fletch.

: Okay, Everybody's keen on Lee, and for good reason. He's the secret gem in the Askewniverse crown, as of yet undiscovered by the Big Leagues and Multi-Multi-Multi-Million-Dollar-Budget-Filmmakers of the world.. I too, am keen on him; dude is funny and likable, and has great timing...

: BUT-

: What with this being a non-askewinverse-askew venture, maybe a central casting of a non-askew regular might add peanut butter to the chocolate, so to speak.

: 1)JOHN CUSAK- been around since forever, only now acknowledged as a great actor... After opening HIGH FIDELITY, and with GROSSE POINTE BLANK, has some bankability(Unlike Lee's BANKY-bility, which nets him our collective love.), and can get those magazine covers. A cool guy from all outward appearances, and can handle wordy dialogue by making it his own delivery. Adds creedence to Kevin's filmmaking as well, deflects some critics waiting to pounce after giving praise for DOGMA.

: 2)EDWARD NORTON- hollywood and critical wunderkund, this guys got more buzz than an angry hornets nest, and the skillz to boot. Again, adding an accepted and acclaimed amazing actor to the rosters of VA, at this new juncture, may be the "synergy" [that's for you, Tom, my friend. :)] needed to get this a big, big PR boost. Also, after KEEPING THE FAITH, dude proves to be good at comedy timing.

: 3)WILL SMITH- After his dramatic turn at Jim West, he has proven himself to be able to jump the race barrier in terms of "surprise casting." Add to this the visual joke of having him play Young Chevy Chase in the "bookends" that you spoke of, and you've got box office, and comedy gold.(Just kidding. Actually, casting Brian Lynch after his breakaway role as COMIC BOOK PANELIST in CHASING AMY would make more sense.)

: Anyway, I'm sure you have your own plans, and this is all sound and fury, signifying if not nothing, than at least "not too much."
