However, audiences have changed since then (well, the ones that studios give a damn about, anyway). Chevy Chase was a box-office draw back then, so THAT's what sold the original "Fletch." Jason Lee's an excellent choice, with perhaps Bill Murray as, say, his browbeating superior (which would tickle Chevy pink, haha; "Okay, Bill, in this scene, all you have to do is pretend it's 1977, Chevy's come back to host 'SNL' coked out of his gourd, and you're alone backstage with him. Action!").
Anyway, the point is what was popular in 1985 isn't guaranteed to be a major selling point in 2000, no matter who's attached to it. How many people would flock to see another sequel to "The Karate Kid" or "Back to the Future"?
