Back to the Future Reference in Mallrats?

I was on the Back to the Future website and they had a list of Back to the Future references in other films. In it, they stated that in the Mallrats ending with Brodie doing a voice over he says "The shark still looks fake" Now this is obviously exactly what Marty says in part II in 2015. My question is was this direct homage to the famed trilogy (bttf, not jersey) or just a coincidence. I ask b/c I've never heard Kevin say anything about liking or disliking the Back to the Future flicks. Oh, well.
