They were closed because Kevin filmed it at night after he closed at the Quick Stop. Since the movie takes place during the day, they had to be closed. Also, on a side note, it's filmed in B&W because the fluoroescent lighting in the store gives off a green tint on color film - and black and white film is cheaper.
