From my understanding of what they were trying to do he just traveled faster than the speed of light, at which point time begins reversing itself. Granted this theory only really holds water if he were traveling in a straight line out into space, but I think that was the basic concept there. Thats why it was "forbidden" and such, he had the power to travel faster than the speed of light and change history but was forbidden to do it. If they really did just have him make the earth spin backwards to reverse time, that is pretty weak.
And I dont know about Superman 2 being better than the original. The like last 25 minutes or so totally ruin 2 for me. What was up with the like saran wrap 'S' shield he throws...and the holographic images...and the kiss that makes Lois forget EVERYTHING. I'll take the original.
