Also, check out the Darkk Phoenix Saga if you haven't already. (There is a graphic novel.) It's widely considered to be the best X-Men story ever written and some of Chris Claremont and John Byrne's best work.

Days of Future Past is pretty kick ass, but I think it should maybe be the story for the third or fourth X-Men movie. The first flick barely introduced us to the X-Men and I'd like to see some more of the "world that hates and fears them" before they start showing future realities and all that jazz.
Bryan Singer has said that he'd like the Sentinels to be the villians in X-Men 2 (great idea, but they need a grand villian controlling them - maybe Mastermind or Mr. Sinister - and one of the Sentinels just HAS to turn into either Master Mold or Nimrod). And once you read Days of Future Past, you'll see what kind of evil bastards the Sentinels can be...
