: An even more annoying thing to do is have the character talk to the camera. This works in Woody Allen movies. This worked in FERRIS BUELLER. This worked in HIGH FIDELITY (to some degree). You could argue that it works in MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE. I laughed at it a couple of times in the Christian Slater vehicle KUFFS. But most of the time it's bad bad bad bad bad. To see it at it's worst, go rent DOWN TO YOU, the Miramax Freddie Prinze Jr./Julia Stiles opus. Or better yet, don't. Stay away. BUELLER and Woody Allen aside, I don't think I've been in a theater where the audience hasn't groaned when the characters turn to the camera and start dispensing logic. I'd lose it if I were you.
It also worked the best in Goodfellas when henry hill is in court and then all of a sudden Hill starts talking to the camera.
