It could have something to do with the aspect ratio - the ratio of frame width to frame height. Apparently it's pretty common for films to be shot in one aspect ratio but shown in others. For example, maybe the filmakers shot it in big fat full frame with the mikes in shot because they expected it to be shown in the skinnier wide screen format - but for some reason the theatre you went to didn't show it this way. I suppose it would be different in other theatres - some might use masking (those black stips at the top and bottom) or something.
