After watching Mallrats for the first time, I was reading the credits and noticed a dedication to John Hughes as well (Breakfast Club, like I really need to say). Maybe not an influence as such, but certainly someone whose films I greatly enjoyed when I was younger, and almost certainly around the same time that Kevin was watching them (as I'm one day older than him). It's a shame John now churns out tat like Home Alone or the ghastly 101 Dalmations live action flick, but at his peak, he was untouchable.
Actually, maybe the influence was more musical - although it was much poppier, John usually had some cracking tunes in his soundtracks ("Beat City" by The Flowerpot Men in Ferris, for example), although he never released soundtrack albums (with the exception of Breakfast Club). I'm glad Kevin does do soundtracks, otherwise I would have gone nuts trying to find a copy of "Chewbacca" from Clerks...
