The Mallrats-Clerks Connection

Did anyone else notice that, in fact, Mallrats in a prequel to Clerks? The event of the girl dying in the YMCA pool happens the night before Mallrats and her wake is in Clerks. This must mean that one or two days later (and after Jay gets the sides shaved out of his hair) they hang out in front of Quick Stop Convenience and the events involving Randal and Dante occur.
