: Nice job hosting Exposure last night!!! I liked the slight plug for the Stash! Subtle.
Subtle like a freight train full of jet fuel crashing into a nitroglycerine factory. (Ok, so I'm exaggerating.... slightly =P )
Anyhow, this is my first post here on the Askew boards, prompted by my viewing of Exposure on that Sci-Fi channel the other nite.
While, I found Kevin's hosting to be pretty good (though, I'm wasn't very familiar with hearing him actually speaking in consecutive sentences) I thought the clips chosen left something to be desired. Sure, Lucas In Love was an obvious choice (due to its commercial popularity which only blossomed due to the fact that its creators sell their product, unlike most of the other notable web-movie creators). TTR, a long time favorite of mine made the list, and imo it was the best clip on the show. Searching for Carrie Fisher ate the most time and added the least to the program. I dont understand how that one made the cut. Then there was Freiheit, which was a novelty, in that it was one of Lucas' first filmz, and hadn't been shown before (on TV anyhow) - yet, it wasn't much to watch... shallow symbolism, no dialogue, and some kid who might be Matt Damon's long lost Uncle.
What really bothered me about the program was the glaring absence of some of the best Lucas/StarWars tributes to be found on the net. The most conspicuous of which is Kevin Rubio's Troops ("Cops" style Stormtrooper program transpiring on Tatooine just after D2&3PO arrive). This may still be the best NetFlim tribute to StarWars. (If you havent seen it by now, go look for it, its worth the dload time). Additionally, the much anticipated release from 2MuchTimeLtd, namely ParkWars, didnt even get a mention. Of course, their finish product has not been released yet, but their trailers, and other small related clips are very well done. But then, they also make use of SouthPark characters (ComedyCentral), so maybe SciFi brass had a problem with plugging that project. Regardless, there are many fanfilms which fit alot more entertainment in to alot less time than Searching for Carrie Fisher did (don't get me wrong, it was a cute premise, and the scene with Carrie at the end was something of a payoff, but imo there was alot of other, better, films on the net than that one).
Anyhow, that's how I felt about the show. Kevin, if you happen to read this, I thought you did a pretty good job. I won't go so far as to say great, but you were entertaining, and somehow conversational in your style. Not the typical over-edited scripted blind regurgitation you see most of the time on similar programs. But there's some room for improvement too (BLASPHEMER!), though, to my limited knowledge, your experience in such work is not vast. I'd love to see you host a semi-regular program in a similar set-up. Logic dictates that there will always be an increasing number of small-budget shorts debuting on the net - perhaps its not long until Sci-Fi or some other cable network runs a regular showcase of the best of such short films. (Of course, maybe that show already exists, right under my nose.... I don't watch enough television to know).
Anyhow, Ill spare all yall any more of my ramblings.... for now....
