: : Now, I'm no fan of MAGNOLIA as a complete work- I think it has moments of greatness but is undermined by being way too indulgent and unfocused and having an equal number of shite moments as it has great ones- but how can you dismiss HARD EIGHT and BOOGIE NIGHTS and yes, a good portion of MAGNOLIA, as being just "crap"?
: What exactly were the "shite" moments in "Magnolia," per se?
: I know some sequences (especially the ones involving dying old men, mumbling) were trying on one's patience (mostly because it was difficult to follow the dialogue), but if you watch "Magnolia" with the captions on, you'll note that the script is actually rather tight and these sequences hold together.
: I guess I'll admit that the sub-plot involving "the dead guy in the closet" and a little boy named Worm were a bit too truncated to make sense to the casual viewer, but Worm's rap was just one of those great little moments if, for nothing else, Reilly's reactions to it.
: Reilly can just stand there and the guy's fuckin' funny, so sue me...
: Though Worm's a little hard to understand, the caption's will help you to realize that his rap lays out the structure of his (admittedly deleted) subplot, hints at the Divine aspect of the film's interconnectedness, plus it ties him to the prophet-like child in the opening who knew exactly what was going down AND to the "What Do Kids Know?" motif running throughout the film.
